Osteoporosis
Your answers are highlighted below.
Question 1 |
National Osteoporosis is celebrated in the month of May. In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone density, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis and broken bones. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, eight million are women and two million are men.
Trivia Question: At what age and what gender is it recommended to obtain initial screening for osteoporosis with a bone density scan with no additional risk factors?
50 years or older in females
60 years or older in females and males
65 years or older in females
65 years or older in females and males |
Question 1 Explanation:
Discussion: A bone density test is the only test that can diagnose osteoporosis. People cannot feel their bones getting weaker. They may not know that they have osteoporosis until they break a bone without proper screening. The U.S. Preventative Services task force recommends screening for osteoporosis in women aged 65 years or older and in younger women whose fracture risk is equal to or greater than that of a 65-year-old white woman who has no additional risk factors. Current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for osteoporosis in men at any age. Osteoporosis screening is very important due to people not able to feel their bones getter weaker. Ideally screening should take place before any fractures occur due to underlying osteoporosis. The screening test will help your healthcare provider make recommendations to help you protect your bones. Treatment advances have been made for individuals with osteopenia or osteoporosis through a combination of proper supplements (calcium and Vitamin D), exercise, and medications.
